I wrote this review of the Pinbutton case, as I was going to return it. Upon getting the instructions from Pitaka, I decided otherwise simply because their return requirements are far from convenient. So I used it for a day or so and put it back in the box. If anyone wants it I'll trade for a Spigen Neo One lol.
Here's my review; tldr at the bottom:
When I saw that the Pinbutton case would be available for the S25 Ultra, I was hyped. I went so far as to post on reddit when the case finally became available for purchase a lil early, the night of 2/6/25.
The case arrived Monday, and I'm writing this on Wednesday night, with a pending return.
I have had many different kinds of CF/Kevlar/Aramid cases over the years from many different brands, ranging in price, so I have a decent baseline of what a premium 70$ case should feel like. This does not feel like a 70$ case, and I would be hesitant to say it feels premium. Aspects of the case feel premium, but the overall package does not in any way.
One of my biggest complaints is that the TPU material is VERY flexible, and feels cheap. The edges of the case do not hold the phone tight enough to feel sturdy, and they easily deform down off of the sides of the phone. I've noticed that debris and lint quickly gather in the gap between the case and the phone sides due to the poor fitment. I suspect this will eventually cause scratches on the frame of my phone. A slightly less flexible material, alongside a tighter fit would make a world of difference here.
The Aramid back is nice, with some slight adhesion spillover around the edges where it meets the TPU (easily seen in pic). Early QC woes, I'm guessing. The buttons for power and volume are on par with other manufacturers and feel fine. The magsafe adhesion has been adequate with no notable issues.
Without the pinbuttons, this is a $30-$40 case at best, but, you don't buy the pinbutton case for just the case.
Now let's get down to the buttons. As far as feel, the Pinbuttons are clicky and satisfying. The idea is great but the functionality is not as adaptable as I had assumed. The buttons use NFC to trigger routines that you assign to them in Modes and Routines menu in settings. I've set one up to open music, one to more easily take screenshots and one to open up a specific conversion.
I have been mostly unimpressed.
The positives:
They're buttons, they click and sometimes they work the first time.
The negatives:
The button presses do not always register, I assume due to the poor fitment of the case.
There is a varying but significant delay (.75-1.5 seconds) when pressing the button, and the assigned shortcut executing. I know this is an NFC issue, but I didn't expect it to be as bad as it is. I know that .75-1.5 seconds doesn't sound like much, but it's frustrating to utilize these for multitasking as gestures are simply faster and far more consistent.
Between these two issues, I've found the best way to use them is to just basically spam the button until it works properly. Not ideal.
Given that the phone case is mostly made up of cheap feeling, poorly fitting TPU and a plate of aramid glued to it, at $70, this is a difficult sell, even with the button gimmick. Skip this one and get a full aramid case instead.
TL;DR: $40 case (max) cosplaying as a $70 case because of NFC buttons.
